Semper Cool author Barry Fixler promotes cause with book
NEW YORK – Marine Corps Vietnam combat veteran-turned-author Barry Fixler, whom Publishers Weekly called “an intriguing, rare bird,” is planning an aggressive marketing campaign in support of his new book-with-a-cause, Semper Cool.
With a goal of raising $1 million, Fixler is donating all of his royalties from Semper Cool to wounded U.S. military veterans and their families. Fixler, a self-professed patriot, is financing a TV/radio/print advertising campaign and nationwide author tour to promote the book and his mission.
In Semper Cool: One Marine’s Fond Memories of Vietnam, Fixler recounts in vivid detail how the Marine Corps and the horrors of war transformed a mischief-making, well-off Long Island kid into a battle-hardened man and a patriot. Fixler also relives the 2005 shootout in his Bardonia, New York, jewelry store that captured national attention and continues to air on TruTV’s Most Shocking Videos.
Foreword Reviews labeled Semper Cool as “an unabashedly honest memoir without a trace of touchy-feely sentiment,” and Publishers Weekly said Fixler “never sugarcoats the nasty business of war.” Foreword Reviews called Fixler’s transformation from well-to-do juvenile delinquent to war-seasoned patriot “an amazing accomplishment.”
Equally amazing is Fixler’s decision to donate all of his profits from Semper Cool to wounded veterans.
“This is America’s book,” Fixler said. “My experiences in Vietnam are in this book and that makes it sacred to me. It wouldn’t be right to make money on it.”
Fixler’s promotional ads will run on the Military and History Channels, AM radio stations and national military publications such as Leatherneck magazine and Vietnam Magazine.
The effort to raise $1 million for wounded veterans has resonated with would-be readers.
Semper Coolhas been a hot seller in the suburban New York area, said Jocelyn Ford, manager of the Barnes & Noble in Nanuet, N.Y.
